2017 Kia Forte S

The New Kia Forte S may not be flashy, but it is a great offering for a price conscious consumer who knows what they want and appreciates simple honesty.

southwest1

The S model makes its debut in the sedan portion of the lineup (there are coupes and hatchbacks too), slotting between the entry-level LX and “loaded” EX. External appearance has been tweaked, particularly in front. There’s a new engine for the LX that’s also used by the S, and the safety and connectivity technology features that are becoming prevalent throughout the industry can now be found in Kia’s compact.

Its standard equipment includes a “sport-tuned” suspension and a subtle decklid spoiler—end of story. Other core items are 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome-tipped exhaust outlets, LED positioning lights, automatic projector-beam headlights, manual air conditioning, 7-inch-color-touchscreen audio, satellite radio, rearview camera, UVO infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, specific two-tone-cloth upholstery with white contrast stitching, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob.

The audio system—now with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility—is easy to set and use (station tuning is via an external knob), and other screen-based functions show up well for quick access. The three climate-control dials are simplicity itself. Black-and-gray seat fabric feels sturdy while injecting some visual variety. Areas of soft-touch material are scattered about the cabin—above the twin instrument dials, on the dash above the glove box, on armrests and door centers, and atop the front doors.

The New Kia Rio at the Paris Auto Show

The Rio has been one of Kia’s best-selling models globally in recent years. There have been more than 473,000 models sold world-wide in 2015 alone, which added up to 16% of their sales for the entire year. Well, it is new and improved for the upcoming model car season.

It also will possess some of the most advanced and innovative safety features in its class. The new design was created by offices in Germany, California, and their home design base in Korea. The cabin is more spacious than ever with driver mobility and capability in mind, while the cargo capacity has been expanded to 325 liters. The interior design is more practical than any predecessor. Also, it is packed with all new cabin technologies that makes it the most advanced model to date. Bo and the Boz for Kia

I think it is great when companies can get legends of any sport to come together and promote a product even if it means poking a little fun at your former self.

southwest1

Most of you know that Bo Jackson was one of the hardest working, hardest running backs to tackle in the NFL.  He was a rare combination of speed, size and finesse at the running back position the NFL had ever seen.  He was also a stud of a baseball player as well.

Then we have Brian Bosworth.  The Boz was a great college linebacker at Oklahoma and came to the NFL with a lot of hype and to live up to his persona, he didn’t mince words.  Before the first game the two would be on opposite sides, Boz practically promised to single handedly stop Bo.  Things didn’t go according to plan.  Bo plowed over Boz and had a great game.

So enter Kia’s genius Tecmo Bowl advertising where Bo is cruising down the field and takes the hand off as he is driving the 2017 Kia Sorento, just as he is heading toward the endzone, there is Boz between him and the goal line.  Bo stops and Boz gets in and says thanks for not running me over and Bo says, “You mean, again.”  Boz says just drive and they ride into the endzone.  It says a lot about Brian’s character as a person to do a commercial like this, as well as speaking volumes for Kia’s ad campaign.  This is a great commercial all the way around.

New Kia Rio: Epitome of Style

Kia has finally released a few details regarding one of their more anticipated cars of the year in advance of its official debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month. This updates model of the ever-so-loved Rio is anticipated to be released in North America for either the 2017 or 2018 model car season.

southwest1

The new Rio is slightly larger than the previous models. One-half inch longer, to be exact. This also means having a slightly more stretched wheel base as well. Kia has also released that their new model is far sharper than the driving capabilities of the previous seasons, which enhances the over-all driving experience. One thing is for sure. According to The Car Connection, the new model is far more stylish than any models of the past. While the same general style concept has been continued on the inside, it has been innovated to offer a more modern feel to the ride, as well as improvements have been made to systems such as Kia’s Uvo infotainment.

More is to be released later this month from the official debut at the Paris Motor Show, but these few details are enough to build anticipation even more. Keep an eye out for the release of the new Kia Rio model. In the meantime, I urge you to head to your local Kia dealership and see what other phenomenal models they have.

With the Sorento earning “good” crashworthiness ratings and a superior rating for the optional front-crash prevention system, Kia continues to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to safety.

Southwest1

“These results are a clear indication that Kia places a high priority on safety by offering advanced crash avoidance technologies and enhancing vehicle structure through the use of advanced high-strength steel,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning, KMA. “We are proud that the Sorento received strong ratings across the board, and having earned the prestigious TSP+ award bolsters our strong safety record and the integrity of our products.”

The 2017 Sorento is available with many driver-assistance systems including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and HID headlights with Dynamic Bending Light technology, high-beam assist, and rear parking assist.

To qualify for a Top Safety Pick Plus rating, each vehicle must earn “good” ratings in each of the five crashworthiness tests – small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength and head restraints – as well as an “advanced” or “superior” rating for front crash prevention. The third-generation Sorento is available in five trim levels. The handsomely equipped LX, EX, SX, and SXL models are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 185 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque, or a 3.3-liter V-6 that makes 290 horsepower and 252 lb.-ft. of torque, while the EX trim is also available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Sorento continues to offer an advanced AWD system that automatically routes power to the wheel with the most traction, while inside, the Sorento delivers class-up premium materials, offering the perfect combination of refinement and capability.

2014 Buick Enclave Premium SUV

Large crossover SUVs have become the vehicle of choice for many large families. It’s easy to see why, as these crossovers offer plenty of room inside for passengers and their belongings, as well as the availability of all-wheel drive to get them confidently to their destinations in foul weather conditions. Among these new-age station wagons, the 2014 Buick Enclave stands as a sensible choice, particularly if you want something that’s upscale but still significantly less expensive than the full-on luxury crossovers from various European and Japanese automakers.

Like its Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia platform mates, the Buick Enclave offers a spacious cabin, a variety of seating configurations, a pleasant ride and sufficient V6 power. The Buick boasts fancier styling, however, as well as richer interior furnishings than its cousins. It also comes with more equipment, as all models feature amenities like xenon headlights, triple-zone automatic climate control and the IntelliLink touchscreen electronics interface (which includes smartphone app integration) as standard.

Naturally, there are plenty of choices out there. Checking out the Enclave’s aforementioned Chevy and GMC relatives is still a good idea, as you may like their styling or lower base prices. The Ford Flex, with its wagonlike styling and available turbocharged V6, is a funkier take on the same theme and definitely worth a test-drive, as is the more athletic-handling and nearly as spacious Mazda CX-9. And if you’re willing to drop down a bit in size, higher-end rivals like the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60 have even nicer interiors, advanced features, and in the case of the Infiniti, an available hybrid powertrain. The MDX, meanwhile, offers the best overall driving characteristics of any three-row SUV in this price range. These are all worthy vehicles, but with its handsome styling, enormous cabin and competitive pricing, the 2014 Buick Enclave easily holds its own in the current population of family-friendly crossovers.

No Video Content

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2014 Buick Enclave is a full-size crossover that essentially comes in three trim levels that are referred to as groups: Convenience, Leather and Premium.

Every Enclave comes standard with second-row captain’s chairs and seven-passenger capacity. A second-row bench seat is optional on the Leather and Premium groups and increases the seat total to eight.

The Enclave with the Convenience Group comes with 18-inch wheels, automatic xenon headlights, rear privacy glass, a power liftgate, heated mirrors, rear parking sensors, remote ignition, cruise control, tri-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat (plus two-way lumbar adjustment), a two-way power passenger seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cloth upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Standard electronic features include OnStar telematics, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, Buick’s IntelliLink electronics interface (which includes voice control and smartphone radio app integration), dual USB charge ports (on the rear of the center console) and a six-speaker sound system that includes a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, an iPod/USB audio interface and satellite radio.

Stepping up to the Leather Group adds 19-inch wheels, a blind-spot warning system, cross traffic alert, leather upholstery, heated front seats and an eight-way power passenger seat.

The top-of-the-line Premium Group includes all the above plus adaptive headlights, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, a blind-spot monitoring system, a rear cross-traffic alert system, forward collision alert system, lane departure warning system, a power-adjustable steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and a 10-speaker Bose sound system (optional on Leather Group).

Options on the Leather and Premium groups include 20-inch wheels, a dual-panel sunroof, a rear-seat entertainment system, a 110-volt power outlet, a Bose surround-sound audio system and a navigation system integrated into IntelliLink.

Powertrains and Performance

Every 2014 Buick Enclave comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, while all-wheel drive is an option. Properly equipped, the Enclave can tow 4,500 pounds.

In Edmunds performance testing, an all-wheel-drive Enclave went from zero to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, which is on par with other large crossovers with a base V6.

EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 19 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway) with front-wheel drive and 18 combined (16 city/22 highway) with all-wheel drive.

Safety

Every 2014 Enclave includes antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front outboard side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. Also standard is a large airbag that deploys between the front seats in the event of a side impact. The standard OnStar system includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, an emergency button, stolen vehicle locator and active intervention, and remote door unlock.

Rear parking sensors are standard on all versions. The Leather and Premium Groups include a blind-spot warning system and a cross-traffic back-up warning system. The Premium Group also includes forward collision alert and lane departure warning systems. The latter two are optional on the Leather Group.

In Edmunds brake testing, an Enclave with the optional 20-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in 126 feet, which is an average distance.

In government crash tests, the Enclave earned a top five-star rating for overall performance, with five stars being given for total front-impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. The Enclave also aced the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, where it earned the highest rating of “Good” in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

Interior Design and Special Features

The Buick Enclave interior exists in a realm between regular- and luxury-branded crossovers. Materials are attractive and of good quality. We particularly like the padded vinyl trim on the dashboard: Thanks to contrasting stitching, it looks like real leather and contributes to the Buick’s classy ambience.

The climate controls are operated by three easy-to-use knobs, while every Enclave features Buick’s IntelliLink 6.5-inch touchscreen display. IntelliLink allows smartphone radio app integration, and features a clean layout and intuitive menu structure. The screen itself is mounted low in the driver’s sight line, however, and requires a longer glance away from the road than we’d like. In addition, the system is sometimes slow to respond to touch inputs (and occasionally misses them entirely), making the interface a bit frustrating.

As for more practical matters, the Enclave (along with its GM cousins) is one of the most spacious crossovers available for both people and cargo. Front-row passengers will enjoy abundant head- and legroom, as will second-row occupants. But the middle-row seat cushions are mounted a bit low, which impacts comfort for adults. Sliding those seats all the way back helps alleviate this issue, but doing so effectively kills third-row legroom.

The narrow, flat-cushioned third-row seats are easily deployed and stowed, though they’re really only suited for kids and smaller adults. Some competitors, such as the Ford Flex, are a bit better in this regard. As is invariably the case with three-row vehicles, rearward visibility is almost nonexistent when you have a full crew onboard, so the standard rearview camera is a huge help.

The Enclave bests all of its competitors when it comes to cargo capacity, though. Even with the third-row seats in place, it can carry up to 23.3 cubic feet of luggage. That figure jumps to 68.9 behind the second row and a cavernous 116.3 cubes with the second- and third-row seats stowed.

Driving Impressions

The 2014 Buick Enclave weighs close to 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive, so it’s not exactly light on its feet. The V6 engine provides adequate performance but lacks punch during authoritative passing maneuvers. In addition, the automatic transmission can be slow to react when a quick downshift is needed, though its gearchanges are at least smooth.

On the highway, the Enclave is well suited to transporting people and cargo in abundance thanks to its smooth ride and low levels of wind and road noise. Driven around turns, this big crossover SUV still feels reasonably secure and planted, but it’s by no means sporty. If you’re looking for a crossover that’s a bit more engaging to drive, the CX-9, Flex and MDX are all good choices.car

2017 Kia Sportage LX SUV

When a vehicle’s been around for a few generations, as the Sportage has, its basic characteristics are usually well-established, so you know what to expect from the next one. But for the fully redesigned 2017 Sportage, Kia directly addressed two of our primary complaints about the previous model. First, the formerly cramped backseat is now remarkably roomy, to the point that a family might not need anything more. And second, the formerly firm ride is now relatively compliant.

In short, we’re running out of reasons why the Sportage isn’t a head-of-the-class standout among small crossover SUVs.

The new 2017 Kia Sportage has a fresh face that prominently features Kia’s corporate grille.

If there’s one thing that still holds the Sportage back, it’s lackluster fuel economy, which we called out last year and must underscore again for 2017 despite mild improvements. This is a predictable problem, as both available engines and the mandatory six-speed automatic transmission are largely carryover items from the outgoing Sportage. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive combo is pegged at 22 mpg in combined driving, according to EPA estimates, trailing the Honda CR-V by a significant 5 mpg, while the optional 2.0-liter turbo can only manage 21 mpg in combined driving. On the bright side, the engines are quiet and refined, and the smooth-shifting transmission responds quickly when you need a downshift.

By the numbers, at least, another 2017 Sportage shortcoming is its cargo capacity, which is limited to 60.1 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded down, easily outdone by the RAV4’s 73.3 cubes and the CR-V’s 70.9. Still, you might find it more than adequate for your needs, and the Sportage is notably nose-to-tail shorter than both rivals, making it a bit more maneuverable in close quarters. Additional strengths include an upscale cabin that’s surprisingly quiet at speed, an excellent optional 8-inch Uvo touchscreen and responsive steering that gives this Kia an appropriately sporting feel.

The 2017 Kia Sportage joins a group of affordable crossovers that’s never been more competitive. In addition to the above-mentioned RAV4 and CR-V, there’s the smaller Honda HR-V, which offers an exceptionally spacious interior for its size and impressive fuel economy but suffers from laggardly acceleration. The Mazda CX-5 is a perennial favorite among our staffers for its capable handling and well-rounded feature set, while the reinvented 2017 Ford Escape merits strong consideration. But if you’re shopping for a crossover in this genre, you owe yourself a drive in the thoughtfully redesigned 2017 Sportage.

The 2017 Kia Sportage is a small crossover SUV with seating for five. It’s offered in three trim levels: LX, EX and SX Turbo.

All 2017 Sportage versions have a central control layout that wraps toward you for ease of access.

The LX comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED running lights, automatic headlights, rear privacy-tinted windows, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, rear climate vents, 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and a six-speaker sound system with a USB port, an auxiliary input jack and satellite radio.

The EX upgrades to 18-inch wheels, foglights, heated mirrors, roof rails, a gloss-black grille, a windshield-wiper de-icer, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver seat (with power lumbar), a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear USB charging port and a 7-inch touchscreen with the latest version of Kia’s Uvo infotainment system (including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).

The SX Turbo boasts 19-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, automatic high beams, LED foglights and taillights, power-folding mirrors with LED turn signals, a sport-tuned suspension, a hands-free power tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a heated flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, an upgraded driver information display, an eight-way power passenger seat, ventilated front seats, dashboard accent stitching, gloss-black interior accents, an 8-inch touchscreen interface, a navigation system and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

A number of these standard features can be added to lower trim levels as options. For the LX, the Popular package adds the roof rails, heated mirrors, windshield-wiper de-icer, power driver seat, heated front seats and illuminated vanity mirrors, while the Cool and Connected package throws in the 7-inch touchscreen with Uvo and the automatic climate control. For the EX, the Premium package adds the panoramic sunroof, power-folding mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED interior lighting and heated steering wheel (though this wheel lacks the SX Turbo’s flat-bottom design and shift paddles), while the Technology package tacks on the automatic high beams, hands-free power tailgate, ventilated front seats, power passenger seat, 8-inch touchscreen and Harman Kardon audio system.

2016 Kia Cadenza

The Kia Cadenza joined the South Korean automaker’s lineup in 2014 as its first full-size sedan. Though it’s been joined by the larger, rear-drive K900 luxury four-door, the Cadenza still strikes us as the ultimate sedan in the Kia lineup. It’s styled and packaged well, has a premium level of refinement, and proves that Kia should be taken seriously.  Luxury badge or not, it can seem like a very good deal to a great many families and comfort-minded folks.

Southwest1

The Cadenza feels quick and responsive relative to other large front-drive four-doors, but it’s not a true sport sedan by any stretch. Power is provided by a 3.3-liter V-6, making 293 horsepower and 255 pound-feet. When driven at anything but a sport-sedan pace, this is a car that feels confident on the back roads yet maneuverable in town.

The Cadenza has top-notch interior comfort, without those boat-like old-fashioned big-car motions. It’s also luxury-car quiet inside. Get the Luxury Package and you’ll have ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and even an extendable driver’s thigh bolster—something rare in this class of cars and something that will be appreciated by tall drivers. Once you’re in, this is a sedan that doesn’t disappoint in the subtle details. The Cadenza is a very quiet-riding sedan, with almost no wind noise, and very little road noise, at highway speeds. Materials, and the leather upholstery, are very impressive throughout the cabin.

Kia leads industry in J.D. Power quality study

Kia overtook Porsche to lead the industry in J.D. Power’s annual report card on vehicle quality, marking the first time in 27 years that a nonpremium brand has topped the list.

Kia joins Toyota as the only nonpremium brands to have finished first in the 30-year history of the Initial Quality Study, J.D. Power and Associates said today in releasing the results at the Automotive Press Association here. Toyota came in at No. 1 overall in 1989.

This was the second consecutive year that the nonpremium brands were led by Kia. The South Korean marquee finished second overall in 2015, with a score of 86. This year’s first-place finish marks the culmination of a steady ascent from 18th in 2012.

Last summer, Kia vowed to take the title this year to fight the perception among consumers that its quality wasn’t up to snuff. J.D. Power says vehicles with the fewest problems tend to have owners who are most likely to buy that brand again.

“Ranking [No. 1] in the entire industry for initial quality is the result of Kia’s decade-long focus on craftsmanship and continuous improvement, and reflects the voice of our customers, which is the ultimate affirmation,” said Michael Sprague, COO  of Kia Motors America.

Kia narrowly topped Porsche, which finished second overall with 84 problems and had ranked first in each of the previous three years.

“It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen this much improvement in the industry,” said Renee Stephens, J.D. Power vice president of U.S. automotive quality. “It’s very important because what we’re seeing is that our automakers and our supplier base really listen to what consumers are saying, and also consumers are benefiting from that.”

As a whole, nonpremium brands topped premium brands for the first time in a decade, Stephens said. Overall, nonpremium gains were driven by a “simplification” in technology features, she said.

“What we’re seeing with the nonpremium brands is that they’re also adding content, they’re also adding functions” to their vehicles like premium brands, she said. “Nonpremiums are adding content as well, but they’re experiencing lower problem rates.”

The Korean and domestic automakers were also able to make gains thanks to improvements in technology, Stephens said.

“When you see the weight that this has in the industry and how consumers are talking about their vehicle, their experience with technology is very, very important,” she said.

Stephens said reliability remains the most important factor for consumers, who are less likely to stick with a brand if they experience numerous problems.

The study is based on more than 80,000 responses from owners and lessees of 2016 model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Consumers were surveyed from February through May.
